People Who Need Personal Training

After last week’s blogpost about people who do not require Personal Training, it’s now time for the opposite: factors to let you consider if you require Personal Training or not. Read on to find out more!

You previously had sports injuries

If you’ve suffered sports injuries in the past and require the presence of highly qualified trainers to ensure your safety at all times, it is advisable not to exercise independently on your own accord so as to prevent the risk of any potential relapse or worse – further straining of muscles and ligaments that were once injured in the past. Having a Personal Trainer to guide you along the way can also help you realize what to look out for and precautions to follow along during your workout routine so that you won’t overexert yourself again.

You’ve tried working out on your own before – but to no avail

If you’re someone who has turned to YouTube videos in the past, following fitness influencers and performing workouts but to no avail, then a Personal Trainer is just right for you! Perhaps you’ve been focusing on the wrong moves the whole time, or just inexperienced about the whole “fitness” landscape. Don’t worry though, with the assistance and supervision of a Personal Trainer, you’ll be able to see results in no time. From providing workout advice to make your fitness regime more effective, to changing your diet by providing health and nutritional advice, you will definitely find yourself making your money worth.

If the above sounds like you, why not try an Introductory Personal Training Trial Session with us today at our women-only gym? Feel free too contact us via the details listed down below.

Can I do Kickboxing too?

Many of us feel intimidated when we hear kickboxing, and often associate it with violence. This is where most of us miss out on the benefits that kickboxing provides us.

Yes, kickboxing is a technical sport and would require training for one to execute the movements properly. However, with proper guidance and time, anyone would be able to get a hang of the technique and will be able to execute it. As our body adapts fast, we will be able to get used to the pace of the class within the first two weeks. So don’t be too stressed out about not being able to catch up.

Kickboxing can not only be fun but good for your body. As it is a form of exercise, you will be able to lose weight and tone up while enjoying the class. Still not convinced? Well here are some tips so you can be prepared for your kickboxing journey!

Learning Core Moves

Kickboxing is a mixed martial arts class that combines both upper and lower body movements. The first lesson might be a shock to you as you would have to use muscles that you do not engage often. Thus, being familiar with the core moves would definitely help you out in class. You can start off by watching helpful kickboxing videos to help you understand the sport better. This way you would not be overloaded with information in your first class.

Eat for optimal performance

This is a common question we would ask before working out. Should I eat before the class? Well, the answer is yes but avoid stuffing yourself with food and ensure you have enough time for digestion before class. If you have not eaten before class, you would not have the energy to execute the technique but at the same time, if you’ve eaten too full, you would have a stomach ache and even feel unwell. Therefore, before class, a light meal would suffice.

Guidance

Well because Kickboxing is a technical sport, the proper guidance is required for you to learn and execute the movements better. It would also allow you to better understand what stances you should take and what each punch does. With a good and patient instructor, you would be able to improve at a fast pace and have fun in class

So where can I find a good instructor? Well, we’ve got you covered. Here at Active Zone, we are a women-only gym that provides Active Kickboxing Classes. There are also introductory classes for beginners to try out the sports and understand Kickboxing better. We welcome all ladies at any fitness level, so what are you waiting for? Come down and join us for a good time! Remember to check out our social media for more details on the classes we provide!

Relieve your stress with kickboxing!

Everyone experiences stress – whether it is about the looming deadline on your assignments at work, or if your kids at home are being taken care of, or even stressing over when the next pay check is coming in.

Everyone experiences stress, but everyone also has a way of coping with it.

Many choose to relieve stress through various outlets – reading a book, cooking or baking, listening to music or just watching television.

While these are all good ways of relieving stress, what if we told you there was a better way?

Kickboxing has been found to be one of the best ways of relieving stress – even better than just plain old exercise!

Endorphins

Any physical activity will increase the production of endorphins – which is also known as the “feel-good” neurotransmitters. The release of these neurotransmitters gives you that happy feeling and helps you to break away from the stresses of your daily life.

This also improves your mood, helping you to be more relaxed and also have better mental health. Improving your mood can combat negative emotions such as depression and anxiety, and even improve other aspects such as sleep.

The impact of these endorphins have also been said to be enhanced by the group setting.

Overall, it can help to ease your stress levels and give you more control over your moods and the quality of your life.

Fitness

Kickboxing is a full-body workout that has both cardio elements and resistance elements, which can help you improve your cardiovascular system, your muscular strength and endurance, balance, flexibility and coordination, and help you burn fat while you’re at it.

All these benefits not only improve your fitness, but these improvements will translate into all other areas of your life!

You find that you are less tired all the time, your body is more resistant to aches and pains, your movement is better and you can sleep better as well.

Your health is directly related to how good you feel, so being healthy is extremely important in combatting the effects of stress.

Venting

Ever been so stressed that you just want to hit something?

Turn something destructive into something positive!

Kickboxing is high impact – meaning that you will definitely be feeling it when you throw punches and kicks.

What is better at relieving stress than letting it out on some punching bags and pads?

This way, you can even learn a new skill!

Doing kickboxing can not just help you with the physical part, but also can help you find a new community to help and support you.

Active Zone has 3 different kickboxing classes for you to relieve your stress with us!

When and What to Eat Before a Workout?

Finding a time to exercise throughout your day can be especially difficult, particularly during the weekdays.

Having to balance your work schedule, fitting in meals at irregular hours and other commitments such as family and friends, not only is it difficult to reserve some time to get in some exercise, but to ensure that your body is ready to take it on.

Eating before a workout is essential in not just ensuring optimal performance, but also to prevent any health related or threatening issues from happening.

Not eating before a workout, especially if your last meal was hours before, can cause you to feel weak, lightheaded and can even cause painful issues such as gastric.

So, when and what exactly should you be eating to be able to give your all during your workout?

Full Meal

How to Order (or Cook) Thai Food for a Balanced Meal

If you eat a full meal before your work out, ideally you need to give your stomach some time to digest your food before you start moving.

If you eat too late, you would constantly feel like your food may just come back out through your throat!

Not only that, you may experience something called “side stitches”, which is like a sharp pain in the lower abdomen that you get during intensive exercise.

It is recommended that you eat a meal that is high in carbohydrate and protein, and you should get a good 2 to 3 hour rest before you start your workout.

Snack

Walnut Energy Bars - California Walnuts

If you’re rushing to make it to your 7pm class after work, you may not have time to eat a full meal, and the food you had for lunch is long gone by 1pm.

About 30min – 60min before exercise, you should try to eat foods that are higher in the glycemic index (GI).

This basically means that the foods will be digested quickly and help to spike your insulin so you can have enough energy to last you through the entire duration.

Some examples of these foods: bananas, dried foods, yoghurt, or if you are willing to spend – pre-workout or smoothies are another good choice if you’re always on the go!

Breakfast

How to make a big breakfast - Kidspot

Not everyone exercises at night or in the evening. There is a large percentage of morning people who choose to wake up early and exercise to start their day.

If you’re one of those people, you likely would have struggled to decide if it is better to eat before or after your exercise.

Well, we’re here to tell you that it is worth it to wake up that 30min earlier to get an early morning snack in before going for that run.

Why is that?

Your body has not taken in any energy for 8 to 12 hours, and it may not have enough to take you through your whole exercise.

Fuelling your body is important, no matter the time or the place.

Choose foods that are easy to digest, with minimal preparation and you’re on your way to a great early morning workout.

Once you’re done, you can prepare a hearty breakfast for replenishment and recovery.

Listen to your body

Five reasons exercise is powerful stuff for women's health - Exercise Right.

These are all recommended guidelines, however everyone is different and has different needs. Adjust your meals and routines depending on your own body and schedule.

Try out different routines, and see which one suits you the best!

Kickboxing – Why You Should Do It

Kickboxing, like every other sport, is physically demanding.

Which is why kickboxing has become not just a competing sport at the elite level, but also available to the general public to exercise and for fitness purposes.

Kickboxing comes with a wide variety of not just physical benefits, but also mental benefits.

So here’s why you should start doing kickboxing if you haven’t already!

Full-Body Workout

When you do a full 1 minute round of speed punches, there is no doubt that you will feel the fatigue building up in your shoulders.

The same goes for your legs when you continues kick against the heavy bags.

However, that does not mean only your arms and legs are the ones working.

According to senior trainers, it takes your entire body to create force and add power to each movement, making it a full-body workout.

Easily Modified

Kickboxing is for everyone!

It’s easy to modify the speed and the amount of strength that you use in each movement, and you can tailor-make it to suit your current fitness level.

You do not need to worry about keeping up all the time and can easily pace yourself if needed.

On the other end of the spectrum, if you find that the workout is not intense enough, you can always go harder and pick up the pace if you want to!

Power and Speed

Power and speed are two areas of physical skills that are normally not developed in many exercise routines.

You may think that power and speed are only for athletes, however that is not the case.

Learning to generate power and speed not only helps with your reflexes (which can help you prevent falls and also help you become more independent as you grow older), but also help to prevent loss of muscle mass.

Mental Training

Engaging your mind during exercise is extremely important, because it helps to better link your brain and your muscles to improve your neuromuscular connection.

This not only helps you physically by learning to better engage your muscles for better movement, but also trains your cognitive ability to move and think at the same time.

Improving this coordination is done through training to remember and carry out all the different combinations and movements, whilst focusing on good technique.

Who knows, you might even find yourself more alert and coordinated in other areas of your life as well!

Importance of Eating Regularly

Everyone knows what breakfast, lunch and dinner is based on not just the type of foods we eat, but also based on the time that we eat.

Breakfast usually comes first in the morning, followed by lunch in the afternoon and then dinner in the evening.

However, for many who work odd and long hours, it can be very difficult to have these meals on time.

More often than not, we find ourselves skipping breakfast just to sleep in for 10 more minutes, or even having dinner at 10pm at night because work was just way hectic to get a meal in.

While this helps us accommodate our busy schedules, it is extremely unhealthy and can cause quite a bit of problems for your body.

Why is it Important to eat regularly?

Healthy Fast Food - HelpGuide.org

Eating regularly can bring you lots of benefits.

Firstly, it will provide you energy throughout the day. Food is energy, and so when you eat, your body breaks it down to give not just your muscles, but also your organs and brain to help keep them alert and functioning.

Eating regularly also actually minimises cravings. You start to realise that you don’t need to snack much as long as you have your meals at well placed intervals. Many times, these snacks are not the most nutritious so cutting down on them also improves your micronutrient intake with your main meals.

This also helps with weight loss. Unlike unhealthy ways of cutting weight by skipping meals or restricting calories, having regular meals reduces unhealthy snacking and helps to keep your weight in check in a healthy manner.

It takes a while for your body to adapt to a new routine, and so when you eat around the same times everyday, your body will naturally adjust to being hungry close to those times. On the other hand, having irregular meals – either by the number of meals you eat in a day or the times at which you eat your meals – would cause your body to be unable to adapt and becomes unpredictable.

Why is skipping meals bad?

What's Causing Your Lower Abdominal Pain? – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

There are many different reasons as to why people would skip meals – whether it is that they want to lose weight, because they don’t feel hungry at all or they are just too busy to make time to eat.

However, skipping meals can cause you to start snacking more especially in the evenings, or binging the next few days or nights to in a sense “make up” for lost energy from skipping your meals. This can eventually lead to you actually gaining more weight in the future, rather than losing weight.

As mentioned previously, food is energy. So if you skip meals, you will find that you have a lack of energy, find it difficult to focus and just feel plain tired.

Not only that, when you are hungry but cannot eat, you start to become irritated more easily, and realise that you start to lash out more quickly at others.

When this goes on for too long, risk for stomach issues increases.

Gastric pains are a common issue with those who eat irregularly due to the excess acid in the stomach that cause stomach pain and discomfort.

It could also cause constipation and painful bowel movement due to the lack of nutrients and fiber in the diet.

For females, consistently skipping meals can actually cause your body to stop menstruating, and may affect your fertility if serious.

This is because your body is trying to conserve as much energy as possible, and halts all processes that are unnecessary to your survival.

So next time you want to skip a meal, remember that you don’t want to just survive. You want to make sure your body is healthy so you can live.

Our relationship with food is extremely important, and we must ensure that we fuel ourselves well and proper to be able to achieve all that we want to achieve for the day.

Nutrition is equally as important as exercise to our health, or maybe even more.

So make sure to choose to eat right!
