How Recovery Works

Often, we find ourselves focused on the “active” component of a workout programme, but what about the “rest” factor? Recovery doesn’t just signify “a day off” it is where your body is taking a rest and healing itself.

The whole purpose of having a recovery stage is to enable your body’s muscle time to repair themselves and to engage those muscles that are sore from your workouts. This has the ability to lead to improved performance, as your body will be preparing itself for the next training load. Thereby minimising the risk of potential injury on oneself.

Aside from that, there are different things that one can engage during recovery to speed up the process and prepare our body to improve your perform in comparison to the “pre-rest” stage.

Neglecting Recovery

What happens when you neglect the recovery stage? The damage won’t be that severe right! This is where you are mistaken.

To achieve greater sport/fitness performance, your body has to be exposed to various stresses. For instance, training programmes that include exercises like weightlifting, sprinting, endurance runs and the list goes on. However, that usually means that your body has already undergone a substantial amount of stress which your body has yet to adapt to, highlighting the importance of the recovery stage.

If sufficient time is not allocated to support this proccess, the body will break down from repeated intensive exercise as result. This can end up decreasing your performance instead of increase. It may also result in damage to your skeletal muscles as well, leading to more soreness and pain.

Benefits

1. Enables Muscle Recovery

As mentioned above, giving your body ample time to rest and heal promotes your body’s muscle recovery. This is because, when you exercise, the energy or the muscle glycogen stored in your body depletes. Causing the muscle tissues to break down.

Providing your muscles with ample muscle recovery time to be fixed up by your body, replenishing the body’s energy storage and repairing damaged tissues.

2. Overcomes Adaptation

Adaptation usually occurs when your body is put under stress from physical workouts, allowing your body to adapt and improve in terms of efficiency. Once you adapt to the given stress, you will require additional stress to continue to making progress.

3. Prevents Overtraining

As much as you would like to push your body, there are certain limitations as to how much stress your body can tolerate before it buckles from the injuries. With too much work and too little rest and recovery days, you could find yourself in a state of “burnout” very soon. Having this condition, is even harder for you to recover from.

Moreover, the consequences are found to have led to a rise in body fat, increased risk in dehydration, and worsened mood.

4. Achieves Lifestyle Balance

Working out is not all that is when it comes to a healthy lifestyle, once awhile, take a rest day and learn to give your mind and body a well deserved break. Establishing a healthy lifestyle balance is crucial to allow you to give your body the time it needs to fully recover from your exercise sessions.

All in all, do remember to include rest days in your own workout programmes! It is essential to pay attention to your body’s condition and to gauge how you are feeling as well. If you are feeling physically worn out, do give yourself a rest.
