Seniors: Come and Learn Kickboxing!

A few months ago, Active Zone launched our pilot Active Seniors Kickboxing Programme in an attempt to allow Seniors to continue leading an active and healthy lifestyle. We know that people may not be aware of the benefits of Kickboxing when it comes to Seniors, so read on to find out more!

Occupies Time

For most Seniors, especially those residing alone, they may not have the chance to meet friends and family much. Hence, a large part of their day is spent alone, which can breed loneliness in the long run. What engaging them in meaningful sports activities like Kickboxing can do is occupying a significant portion of their schedule, allowing them to meet more people while taking classes outside instead of dwelling at home. Additionally, it provides a sense of affirmation for their families, knowing that they’re out with company should anything occur during the day or when they’re away.

Boosts Mental Health

Not only through Kickboxing, but exercise alone helps to release chemical hormones in our brain like endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, which reduces feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. This helps Seniors feel more content and be in a happier mental state overall, which also acts as a mood booster! Additionally, going out to learn Kickboxing allows for them to expand their social circle as they’ll be mingling with other participants, or just their trainers – which is sufficient on its own.

Improves Coordination

Kickboxing involves moves like standing on a feet while delivering kicks and roundhouses, where one has to turn their hips in a way to strike the punching bags with their shin with full force. This action alone strengthens core muscles and builds balance, allowing Seniors to become more stable overall. This may seem like a small and insignificant matter, but doing so actually reduces their risk of falls and accidents at home, which benefits their physical health!

Seniors – Come try this out!

Do you know of any Seniors keen on taking on a challenge of learning a new Sport? If so, we have good news to share! Introducing the Active Seniors Kickboxing Programme launched by Active Zone earlier on this year, with the aim of encouraging Seniors to lead a healthier lifestyle by actively engaging in meaningful sports and activities like Kickboxing. If you’re interested to learn more, do continue reading todays blogpost!

Kickboxing for Seniors

The thought of Seniors engaging in Kickboxing classes may seem daunting at first, but we assure you that it’s not as scary as it may seem! This is because of the non-combative nature of Kickboxing sessions here, so the only “opponents” they’ll practice against are equipment found in our studio like round shields, thai pads and and punching bags. Hence, no sparring is involved throughout the entire class duration, so their safety is well taken care of here! Allowing Seniors to learn Kickboxing also provides them with more alternatives compared to the usual exercises they do, which adds a “fun” element and spices up their usual workout routine. After all, there’s no age limit when it comes to learning Kickboxing!

Safety

If you’re wondering about the safety of Seniors when it comes to them learning Kickboxing, rest assured that they’re being trained by highly qualified professional trainers here at Active Zone. With full on supervision and guidance to ensure proper form throughout the session, they’ll no longer have to worry about getting injured here. Additionally, along with the non-combative nature of Kickboxing classes conducted at Active Zone, the lesson pace is slower to allow for better understanding, which reduces the risk of any injuries in future.

Health Benefits

Often, Seniors are required to balance on one feet when performing Kickboxing moves like Kicks and Roundhouses. This trains both their coordination as well as balance, which in turn lowers any potential fall risk in the future. As one gets older with age, they’ll also have a prolonged recovery time when it comes to sustaining any injury from falls, so Kickboxing actually helps to prevent that from occurring. Also, their strength and power also improves with training, allowing them to build more muscles which lowers the risk of any ligament or muscle tears and injury caused by possible overexertion in future.

A new sport for Seniors

If you think that Seniors only can perform light exercises like tai-chi, then think again! In fact, when practiced under constant supervision and guidance, Seniors can actually try out other sports that are of higher intensity than their regular. In fact, the recent launch of Active Zone’s pilot Active Senior’s Kickboxing Programme aims to help provide Seniors with a platform to learn a new sport, while ensuring safety simultaneously. Intoday’s blogpost, we’ll be providing three reasons as to why Kickboxing at our gym is a great alternative for Seniors.

Improves Mobility

Some Kickboxing techniques that require leg power such as Kicks and Roundhouses help to train muscle regions in the legs, including but not limited to the quads, shin, hamstrings and glutes. This helps to improve mobility in Seniors since they’ll experience better blood circulation to their legs, allowing them to have stronger leg power which leads to greater muscle growth. Doing so also allows for easier mobility since it allows them to have more strength in their legs, which greatly lowers the risk of falls and even fractures should they sustain a fall.

Strengthens Joints and Ligaments

Kickboxing also helps to strengthen joints and ligaments in Seniors, especially in the legs since they’ll be training them more intensely because of the need to balance on one foot while executing some moves in general. Strengthened joints also help to reduce the potential onset of health conditions in the future like osteoporosis due to brittle bones.

Boosts Coordination and Balance

Often, some of the Kickboxing techniques taught involve the use of balancing on one leg while swinging kicks using the other – evident in moves like Kicks and Roundhouses. This requires coordination and balance from Seniors, since they’ll have to control their upper body and keep steady throughout the practice. Also, their hand eye coordination will also improve when training with punching bags as they’ll have to hit it correctly at specific points in time.

A new sport for Seniors

Do you know of any Seniors, or yourself wish to partake in a new sports activity so as to put yourself up for a challenge? If that’s the case, we have a good news to share! With Active Zone’s recent launch of our pilot Active Seniors Kickboxing Programme, it provides a good opportunity for Seniors to learn Kickboxing and maintain an active lifestyle.

Why this Programme

Active Seniors Kickboxing Programme help to encourage Seniors to lead an active lifestyle, since most of them do not have the habit of exercising much in their later years. The importance of staying healthy and engaging in healthy sports and games also help to benefit them for reasons that are stated and explained in greater detail below.

Benefits of Kickboxing for Seniors

Why Kickboxing? Firstly, it helps to strengthen joints and ligaments through this full body workout – an important factor to take note of since Seniors are more prone to fall and injury risk in their later years, this can allow them to have a faster recovery time should they sustain a fall in the future. Also, the execution of certain moves like kicks and roundhouses help to improve their coordination and balance, since they’ll be required to stand firm and balance on one leg throughout, preventing them from fall risks in the future as well. Lastly, maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle in their later years help to enhance their immunity and acts as a prevention from illnesses like dementia and alzheimer’s later on in life.

Safety

While the safety of Seniors partaking in Kickboxing is a valid concern, we can assure you that it is our top priority here. Compared to our regular flagship classes, the lesson pace is slower in order to allow for more thorough understanding of Kickboxing techniques, so as to prevent any injuries from happening. Additionally, the presence of our highly trained, professional instructors supervising over them helps to make sure that every move is executed with proper form, thereby ensuring safety throughout.

Can Seniors Do Kickboxing?

Picture Seniors and Kickboxing, simultaneously. If the visual image seems too daunting and dangerous a prospect for you, you’re not the only one! Most people feel that it is unsafe for Seniors who are more injury prone to perform Kickboxing – which is a topic we wish to shed light on in today’s article! Read on to find out more.

Active Kickboxing for Seniors

Active Zone has recently launched our pilot Active Seniors Kickboxing Programme, an initiative aimed to encourage Seniors to workout more and try out different sports like Kickboxing. To mitigate the dangers associated with Kickboxing, the element of combatting is removed, as with our usual Active Kickboxing Fitness Group Classes. Through our Group Classes, Seniors get to learn about various Kickboxing techniques and also have the opportunity to use different Kickboxing equipment like round shields, thai pads and punching bags along the way.

Pros

Did you know that Kickboxing actually provides multiple benefits to Seniors? Firstly, it allows them to strengthen joints and ligaments, which reduces the recovery time period in the event of a fall. Also, it helps to improve their hand-eye coordination, which is important since Seniors face a cognitive decline due to the normal ageing process; this also lowers the risk of getting an onset of illnesses like dementia or alzheimer’s in the future.

Precautions

Active Zone also takes responsibility to ensure that our Seniors do not get injured during our Group Classes. All potential injuries and exercise risks are mitigated to our best abilities. For one, the lesson pace is slower so they can gain better clarity on how to execute each move. Also, the presence of our professional, highly qualified instructors here ensure that all Seniors are under close supervision throughout, such that the injury risks are properly mitigated.

Why Seniors should learn Kickboxing #2

Our blogpost on Monday mentioned three main reasons why Seniors should learn Kickboxing – if that alone doesn’t sound convincing enough, we’ve thought of more points to consider when it comes to why Kickboxing is a suitable sport to be taught to Seniors, and where they can go to join in the fun!

Prevents Onset of Illnesses

Did you know that exercising – not just kickboxing alone – can help to reduce the onset of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in Seniors? This is because scientific research has proven that aerobic exercises can help to prevent a part of the brain called the hippocampus from shrinking, as well as slow down the cognitive decline in brain function, which is a natural and normal part of ageing.

Where to Get Started

After all these convincing pointers, you may wonder where to get started with learning Kickboxing for Seniors. Our gym studio at Active Zone has recently launch our pilot Active Seniors Kickboxing Programme, where we conduct classes for seniors on Saturdays, teaching them skills that are the same as our usual Active Kickboxing group classes. Trainers here are all highly qualified, so rest assured as safety is our topmost priority especially in current challenging circumstances.

How our Active Kickboxing Class benefits Seniors

With the recent launch of Active Zone’s pilot Active Kickboxing Classes for Seniors, we thought that it might be useful to include several benefits of exercise for seniors. Thus, todays blogpost will be about the points mentioned above – read on to find out more!

Improves mobility and balance

Typically, with age comes inflexibility and poorer coordination, which is why frequent exercise is unequivocally vital for seniors. Not only through Kickboxing alone (other workouts and sports have the same effect) will seniors get to train their hand-eye coordination as well as basic motor skills. In turn, keeping active will also reduce their chances of getting health related illnesses like dementia and alzheimer’s later on in life.

Better mental state

This point actually applies for all ages! Did you know? It has been scientifically proven time and time again that exercising actually helps to allow one to feel happier and more content, while at the same time lowering the chances of depression and anxiety by a drastic amount. This is because exercise releases chemical hormones in the brain, also known as endorphins, which are well known to produce these effects. This is especially important for seniors who reside alone with limited social contact with friends and family, as it allows them to mingle with others who are performing the same exercise, thereby enhancing social connections.

Lowers risk of fracture

Allowing seniors to exercise frequently will help them to strengthen joints and ligaments, which also reduce the chances of bone fracture and osteoporosis, a condition where their bones get weaker due to age. In the event of a fall, they will also be much less likely to suffer from worser injury related side effects because of stronger joints after exercising frequently.

Why Seniors should exercise more

As Active Zone launches our pilot Active Seniors Kickboxing Classes, the importance of exercise for seniors become even more apparent now. Although the intensity and range of exercises that they can perform may be limited with age, exercise has actually proven to be beneficial, especially in our later years.

Improves Cognitive Function

Scientific research has proven that the chances of getting diagnosed with diabetes and alzheimers actually decrease drastically upon exercise. Although it may seem that exercise only helps to improve physical functions among the elderly, it can actually also boost their brain strength as it trains their minds as well. Mind-body connection is also improved after working out, which also boosts self-esteem and leads to a higher quality of life in one’s later years.

Improves Sleep

Exercise can help to induce physical fatigue, which will reduce instances of insomnia and allow the elderly to sleep better at night. Getting adequate rest has also been proven to reduce the incidence of chronic mental and physical health conditions later on in life, which helps to boost their mental well-being, especially if they happen to live alone with limited social interactions between family and friends daily.

Improve Strength and Bone Density

Muscles in our body deteriorate with age. As seniors exercise more, flexibility increases alongside bone strength. Osteoporosis chances also decrease with instances of bone fracture when the elderly are engaged in sports activities frequently, no matter the intensity. This ensures that they are kept independently mobile and are able to perform movements like standing up, sitting down and walking alone.
