Weight Loss Tips with Kickboxing

Why do we exercise?

Exercise is tough, it is tiring, physically demanding and sometimes outright painful.

But we do it anyway. Because we want to lose that extra weight, to go down a clothing size and feel a bit better when we look in the mirror.

Starting a weight loss journey is a big commitment. It is a long and difficult journey, and there is no doubt that there will be many setbacks along the way.

As daunting as it seems, it is a good step in the right direction to transition to a better and healthier lifestyle.

To help you along the way, here are some tips that can help keep the motivation high and help you push on through!

Plan Your Meals

Thirty 30-Minute Meals That Are Plant-Based | Forks Over Knives

One important part of weight loss is our nutrition.

Planning your meals helps you to keep track on what goes into your body daily.

Not only that, doing early meal prep saves you from the temptation of going out to buy Macdonalds for a quick and easy lunch, so sticking to your nutritional diet becomes easier!

Adding Variety

Adding variety to anything is a good way to switch things up and keep yourself motivated.

Four types of exercise for a well-rounded personal fitness program ā€¦ ā€“ Scott Free Clinic

In the context of weight loss, switching up the type of exercises you do can help to get yourself pumped up and excited to go.

Instead of morning runs or walks, maybe you can try a new HIIT exercise, or try out some resistance training exercises in the gym.

You can even look for something completely new like joining a kickboxing fitness class to learn new skills while burning some calories!

Variety also works with the nutritional aspect of weight loss. Trying out new recipes or even trying a completely new food is a great way to keep yourself excited about your weight loss journey.

Have an Exercise Routine

Tips for keeping a routine amid a whirlwind of changes - Gundersen Health System

Having an exercise routine is important. We cannot only leave exercise to when we “feel like it”, because once the excuse that you had a long day at work is used, there is no turning back from that.

Once an exercise routine is established, it means that you are able to set aside time from your work and relaxation time to do so. It becomes part of your schedule, which not only helps in planning all your other important commitments, but also ensures that time is still set aside to keep you committed to your weight loss journey.

If you are some that lacks discipline exercise-wise, an exercise routine can be easily set up by signing up for weekly classes so as to build up a routine and habit of exercising weekly!

Good Support System

International Day of Friendship in United Nations in 2021 | There is a Day for that!

Lastly, having a good support system is extremely important in staying disciplined and motivated. Starting your weight loss journey together is even better, because your progress and updates can be shared with one another to keep each other up to date.

Doing it with friends can be useful, not just in sharing information, but even getting together to eat and planning to go for exercise classes provides good company in a long journey ahead.

It’s Time To Stop Obsessing Over Your Weight

How often do you check your weight? Does every little change affect you?

Whether your goal is to lose extra fat in your belly, thighs, hips, or butt, it’s all-too-common to be dissatisfied with certain aspects of your body. Weight has somehow become the most common way of measuring your health and self-worth but truth be told, you don’t necessarily have to lose weight to become healthier.

Best Time to Weigh Yourself: Tips for Accurate Weight Tracking

Health is a combination of so many factors, ranging from the meals you consumer, your frequency of exercise, your relationships, and how you feel about yourself.

Although it is important to feel good about your body, and weight loss goals are not necessarily bad to work towards, some of us can get so caught up about the number on the scale that we lose sight of why weā€™re even trying to lose weight in the first place. (Or if itā€™s even healthy for us to do so.)

If not weight loss, then what should we focus on?

15 Best Exercise Videos on YouTube to Do With Kids | Parents

For those who can look at the scale neutrally, itā€™s just a data point to tell you if youā€™re moving in the right direction. But the number on the scale doesnā€™t tell us everything about how your health is improving. Hyper-focusing on the scale leads many women to ignore those other improvements.

It’s time to make the switch to using other, more meaningful, factors to measure progress.

When people followed healthy habits for enjoyment and wellbeing rather than weight loss, they were more likely to stick to the lifestyle changes, staving off weight gain later, Professor Wittert said. An endocrinologist at the University of Adelaide, Professor Wittert leads a long-term research program into appetite, diet and other lifestyle factors in men.

If you switch the debate and say, ‘stay the same weight if necessary, but there are four or five things you can do to improve your health ā€” then the pressure and distress is relieved.

Exercise can be key

4 ways exercise can make you happier -- even if you don't like to exercise - CNET

Exercise is not a means to an end. Experts generally agree that focusing on the process of exercise rather than the outcome leads to greater long-term success.

In fact, in one study about exercise and motivation, researchers concluded that “change in exercise-related motivational factors, with a special emphasis on intrinsic sources of motivation (e.g., interest and enjoyment in exercise), play a more important role in longer-term weight management.”

If you need help getting started on a regular exercise routine, it may be beneficial to ask for help. Active Zone is a women-only gym and kickboxing studio that aims to help ladies create a fresh, new and exciting fitness program. Get in touch with us to learn more!

Diet vs Exercise: What Matters Most for Weight Loss?

Exercise vs Diet: What Matters Most?

At first glance, dieting seems to be the obvious answer if we want to lose weight.Ā We gain weight when we take in more calories than we need. Therefore, reducing calorie intake would naturally be the key to weight loss. However, this is usually not sustainable. After some time, people tend to revert to their old habits. Even worse, the sense of deprivation leads them to eat more, causing them to put back all the weight they had initially lost.

Exercise and Diet to Keep the Weight Off in the Long Term

In short, the safest and most sustainable way to reduce weight is a combination of caloric restriction and regular exercise in the long term.

Energy Expenditure and Calorie Intake

The total number of calories you burn for energy each day is your total daily energy expenditure. In order to lose weight, the amount of calories you burn should be higher than your calorie intake. By eating the same amount while exercising more, a sustainable energy deficit (where the calories consumed are less than calories burnt) can be created. Regular exercise can also help increase your metabolic rate so youā€™ll burn those calories a lot more efficiently. Just a daily energy deficit of 500 to 1,000 kcal will allow you to lose between 0.5 kg to 1 kg per week. So if your daily calorie intake is about 1,500, you should try to burn around 2,000 to 2,500 calories a day through your daily activities, if you are looking to lose some excess fat and weight.

Make Good Food Choices

Your diet is equally important as well. Keep in mind to fill a quarter of your plate with wholegrains, a quarter with proteins, and the remaining half with the recommended two servings of fruits and vegetables per day for a well-balanced meal.Ā

Once your meals are settled, it is time to work up a sweat by engaging in regular exercise.Ā
It is recommended to have 150 to 250 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a week to help you maintain a healthy weight. Anything more leads to weight loss. Moderate-intensity exercises should cause an increase in your breathing rate. You should be able to carry on a conversation but does not have enough breath to sing.Ā

Pick a Suitable Workout

Working out can be tough on your body, especially if you are not used to it. The heavier you are, the more pressure you put on your lower limb joints.

Ease into a workout programme, perhaps in the pool which minimizes the impact on your knees and joints. When you get more comfortable with exercise, try other activities such as jogging, brisk walking or cycling.

Weight Loss Challenge 2021 Spotlight: Urban Tiller

This blog post is brought to you by Urban Tiller, one of our sponsors for our Weight Loss Challenge!

A Healthier Diet, A Healthier You

It’s not wrong to say that we are what we eat. If your goal is to lose weight, sticking to the 70-30 rule is essential: weight loss is 70% diet, 30% exercise. Out-training a bad diet is much harder than controlling what you eat, so in this blog post, we’d like to share some ways to incorporate healthier foods into your life!

  • Needs vs Wants

The simplest way to plan your diet is to assess what you currently eat. Is there anything you’re having too much or too little of? Think about the dietary changes that can best help you, whether it’s adding more ‘needs’ to what you eat (such as proteins and vegetables) or cutting down ‘wants’ (such as desserts and snacks).

For instance, cutting down on foods that are high in sugar and oil is a good first step. Even small things like asking for less or no sugar in your drinks can go a long way! Eventually, your taste buds will adjust, and you’ll get to enjoy the flavour of the ingredients in your food without relying on their additional flavouring components.

  • The Purpose of Your Food

Weight loss isn’t just about what you eat, but why you eat. If you have a more targeted goal, such as reducing your appetite, it’s important to consider why the foods you’re currently eating aren’t filling you up as much. A good way to suppress your appetite is to increase your protein intake. It takes a longer time to digest compared to carbohydrates, so it will keep you feeling full for a longer period of time!

  • Nutrient Goals

Losing weight can be a daunting task, so it might be more helpful to craft your weight loss journey around smaller goals, such as targeting certain nutrients. The easiest way to have a healthier nutrient-based diet is to have more vegetables. They’re packed with various nutrients and vitamins, and have less calories compared to other food groups, so you can have a larger volume of them without worrying about your weight.

To get the most nutrients from your vegetables, it’s best to have them freshly harvested. Leafy greens can lose up to 90% of their nutrients within 24 hours of harvest! Urban Tiller Singapore delivers fresh, local, and sustainably-grown produce within 8 hours of harvest. By purchasing locally-grown produce, you help reduce the emissions and food wastage from imported produce!

Urban Tiller has very generously sponsored us for our Weight Loss Challenge, where our top qualifiers get to win their Seasonal Salad Boxes! They come pre-washed with a vibrant selection of greens, along with some of the sweetest cherry tomatoes you’ll find in town. Taking Care of Yourself for Workouts

These days, there’s been more emphasis on things you can do to prep yourself for a workout. This goes beyond things like stretching or warming up, but aspects such as skincare. Read on for some tips on keeping yourself in check for your exercises!

  • Pre-Workout: Where and When?

Whether you’re heading outdoors for a walk or travelling to a gym, it’s important to prep your skin. Singapore’s weather can be harsh with the bright sun, so no matter where you go, protecting your skin should be a top priority! Biore’s UV Athlizm is the perfect sunblock for Singapore’s weather, especially if you’re working out. With Tough Boost Tech, the sunblock is light yet strong, and great no matter your workout or activity!

  • Post-Workout: Clean and Cool

Sweat is inevitable in a country like Singapore. Sometimes the lightest exercise can cause us to break out in sweat. Here’s where Biore Sara Sara Body Powder Sheets come in! After wiping down your skin, the sheets leave a cooling solution that evaporates and leaves powder behind. No more feeling sticky from sweat with these convenient, cooling body sheets!

Biore has very generously sponsored these products for those who qualify in different categories of our Weight Loss Challenge– we want to give them a huge thank you for their help! Incorporating Protein Into Your Diet

The thought of becoming bulky like a bodybuilder might be off-putting to some, and the association of protein with body building is common. We’re here to de-bunk this myth, and to show you the benefits of protein for your workout!

  • Protein Alone Doesn’t Make You Bulky

Bodybuilders only achieve their physique from years of excess calorie intake and intense workout regimes. For most of us, extra protein won’t get us anywhere near the body size of shape of bodybuilders. In fact, it’s an uphill battle to become bulky! Muscles are built over years of rigorous training. So if you’ve been thinking about trying out protein in various forms (be it food or supplements), you don’t need to worry about being bulky.

  • Protein Can Curb Hunger Pangs

Protein takes a longer time to digest compared to carbohydrates. You can feel fuller with a smaller volume of food if you increase the amount of protein you ingest! Protein can help reduce ghrelin levels, the hunger hormone. Plus it increases the peptide YY, a hormone that makes you feel full. If you want to reduce your calorie intake, protein might be an option to consider!

  • How Should I Increase My Protein Intake?

You can increase your protein intake in various ways. Eating more meat or vegetable-based protein (such as tofu) can be an easy way, as you can alter the food that you eat. If you want to try your hand at non-meal protein supplements, your go-to option is Barebells Protein Bars! They’re jam-packed with 20g of protein in each bar with no added sugar. It’s a simple way to up your protein without altering your food intake severely.

If you’re interested in joining Active Zone’s Weight Loss Challenge, sign-up’s close on 15 March 2021! It’s open to active clients and registration is free! Head to https://tinyurl.com/AZWLC2021 to sign up and to see the full details!Ā

Achieving Your New Year Resolutions

With every new year, one of the most common resolutions is to be healthier. This often entails smaller goals such as losing weight or committing to an exercise routine. This year, we’re here to give you some advice on how to stick to your resolutions and achieve your goals!

If you’re not sure how to approach your resolutions, keep reading!
Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash
  • Make S.M.A.R.T. resolutions

This acronym was first coined in the Management Review journal in 1981. The letters stand for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Craft your resolutions with these five factors in mind so you won’t be daunted by a resolution that’s too broad or impossible.

For example, losing weight might seem like a huge challenge, but with the S.M.A.R.T. guidelines, you can frame it as “I want to lose 5 kilograms in 12 months”, and accompany it with ways of tracking your progress over the course of the year. This way, you have a specific and measurable goal that is relevant to your weight loss journey. It’s important to craft achievable and time-bound goals so that you can stay motivated to attain them!

Keeping your goals time-bound gives you a clearer picture of when you need to achieve your goals by.
Photo by Alexis Brown on Unsplash
  • Keep yourself accountable

Oftentimes, people give up on their resolutions because they lose steam. With no one to check on them, it’s hard to commit to a goal. One way to stick with a resolution for the year is to find accountability: this can be a diary that tracks your progress and the things you do to get closer to your goal, or finding an accountability group where the members update and support each other in achieving their goals.

Finding others with similar goals to you can be useful in keeping you in check with your own progress. Asking others about their new year resolutions is a good start, and you can form an accountability group with people who might be on the same journey as you!

Making goals and updating others on them is a great way of staying accountable: not just for yourself, but for the people who are supporting you!
Photo by Alexis Brown on Unsplash
  • Sign up for workout classes

Following the same line of accountability, one of the best ways to stick to your resolution of being healthy is to join a workout class. Not only do you have the benefit of accountability, you’ll have a strong and supportive community to keep you working hard!

At Active Zone, we offer a variety of workout classes for women that can help you achieve your goals! Our qualified and experienced trainers will make sure that your workouts are done correctly and safely, and they’ll be more than happy to advise you on the best ways to stick with your health-related resolutions. We offer Active KickboxingMETCON (metabolic conditioning), and ACTS (active circuit training system) classes, as well as personal training sessions. Depending on your needs, you can sign up for classes or trainings that fit you best and to keep you healthy and fit this new year! Each class is 45 minutes long (temporarily due to COVID-19). We look forward to supporting you and helping you achieve your goals!

Boosting Your Metabolism – Easy Ways to Do So!

MetabolismĀ is defined as the series of chemical reactions in a living organism that createĀ andĀ break down energy necessary for life. Hence, your metabolic rate is theĀ rateĀ at which your body expends energy or burns calories.

Boosting your metabolism is one of the ways you can look at to lose weight. And guess what? It’s fairly simple to do so šŸ˜›

Here are 6 ways you can boost your metabolism:

1. Start Strength Training

How To Start Strength Training At Home ā€“ SWEAT
Active Zone Blog Post: Boosting Your Metabolism – Easy Ways to Do So!

Strength training, which can consist of lifting weights, will help you build/retain muscle and combat theĀ drop in metabolismĀ that can occur during weight loss.

Muscle is essential to boosting your metabolism. Every pound of muscle uses about 6 calories a day just to sustain itself, while each pound of fat burns only 2 calories daily.Ā

Your resting metabolic rate is much higher when you have more muscle.Ā

2. Eat More Protein

Protein Food: Make the best of proteins: Know safe limit for your ...
Active Zone Blog Post: Boosting Your Metabolism – Easy Ways to Do So!

Your body burns many more calories digesting protein than it does eating fat or carbohydrates. It increases your metabolic rate by 15ā€“30%, compared to 5ā€“10% for carbs and 0ā€“3% for fats.

Eating protein has also been shown to help you feel more full and prevent you from overeating.

ItĀ can also reduce the drop in metabolism often associated with losing fat. This is because it reduces muscle loss, which is a common side effect of dieting.

3. Keep Yourself Hydrated

Active Zone Blog Post: Boosting Your Metabolism – Easy Ways to Do So!

Drinking water may temporarilyĀ speed up your metabolism.

In one study, adults who drank eight or more glasses of water a day burned more calories than those who drank four.Ā

This calorie-burning effect may be even greater if you drink cold water, as your body uses energy to heat it up to body temperature!

4. Engage in High-Intensity Workouts

Physical benefits of Les Mills GRIT - HIIT Workouts
Active Zone Blog Post: Boosting Your Metabolism – Easy Ways to Do So!

High Interval Intensity Training (HIIT) can help you burn more fat by increasing your metabolic rate, even after your workout has finished.

You can switch up your current exercise program by throwing in some HIIT sessions to give your metabolism a greater boost than usual.

5. Spicy Food Boost

How Your Taste Buds React to Spicy Food - San Diego Restaurant Week
Active Zone Blog Post: Boosting Your Metabolism – Easy Ways to Do So!

Spicy foods contain capsaicin which is a substance that can boost your metabolism.

Cooking foods with a tablespoon of chopped red or green chili pepper can boost your metabolic rate. The effect is probably temporary, but if you eat spicy foods often, the benefits may add up.

One study of capsaicin, at acceptable doses, predicted that eating peppers would burn around 10 additional calories per meal. Over 6.5 years, this could account for 1 pound (0.5 kg) of weight loss for an average-weight male

6. Drink More Green Tea or Oolong Tea

Is green tea good for you? | BBC Good Food
Active Zone Blog Post: Boosting Your Metabolism – Easy Ways to Do So!

These teas not only increase metabolism by 4ā€“5%, but they also help convert some of the fat stored in your body into free fatty acids, which may increase fat burning by 10ā€“17%

As they are low in calories, drinking these teas may be good for both weight loss and weight maintenance.

__

If you’re looking to start on a weight loss journey, or simply maintain the weight that you have, boosting your metabolism can an essential area for you to focus on.

Aren’t the ways to boosting your metabolism simple? Try them out and develop these healthy habits to last you a lifetime.

You can do it!
