Can Kickboxing Really Boost Your Workout?

To keep a workout fun and worthwhile it’s good to mix things up and one way to do that could be through kickboxing. Doing the same workout week after week can get boring, but if you start throwing in some kicks and punches you may begin to see fresh results and feel a new invigorating energy. Adding kickboxing to a workout gives it a new, dynamic twist.

The benefits to taking on such a workout are plentiful and worth the sweaty aches. Kickboxing can transform your workout and lead to further toning of your body and an increasing of endurance. Those two things are what everyone wants from a good workout. And you can still get a great workout without the physical contact of sparring. Let’s explore how kickboxing can do this.

Transformation

Kickboxing is defined as the fighting technique of combining karate-type kicks with the punching of boxing. Both karate and boxing on their own are vigorous workouts, but the combination of them gives you the ability to workout both your upper and lower body. In addition, it takes stamina to get through a good kickboxing workout. Because of this, the cardio aspect to your workout will be covered.

Warm Up & Stretching

The first transformational benefit you would see from adding kickboxing is through stretching. Most people do some stretching, but stretching without purpose can be done carelessly and even skipped. However, with kickboxing it is a necessity. Because you will be kicking and doing movements that you haven’t done before, it could lead to muscle stress. However, by starting with 15 minutes of stretching and warm-up exercises you will get more out of your muscles and…workout.

Basics

There are two ways to do this workout: with the assistance of a trainer who has kickboxing experience or on your own. There are some basics you can do in order to begin seeing the transformation results. The basics include punching, kicking and core training.

Punching

The punching part of the workout will include using heavy bags or speed bags, and pads. The art of performing this aspect of the workout properly is through a combination of punches. The quick jab and hook punch are the combination that will give you the ability to tone the upper arms, shoulders and chest. Performing these combinations over a two to five minute span of time will also get your heart pumping. This is done by increasing the speed and length of time performing these punches.

Kicking

There are three primary kicks to start out with; they are front, side and roundhouse kicks. The best place to start is just kicking at nothing. Stretching will help increase your kicking range. Eventually, you can work up to kicking the bag, pads or punching dummy. The leg muscles will quickly get toned because the entire leg will be used through the aspects of maintaining a strong balance and stance while performing multiple sets of kicks.

Core Training

The core of your body, which includes the abs and lower back muscles, will get an unintentional workout just by performing the punching and kicking training. However, a full kickboxing workout should include strengthening the abdominal and back muscles through such exercise as crunches and side bends. Building the core will help your movements get better and grow your stamina, as well as tone your body.

Each aspect will work the major muscles of the body. The combination of using the muscles in such a quick manner tones as well as develops an endurance that can speed up the metabolism. It won’t take long to see the benefits of this body transforming workout.

How Long Will It Take To See Results From Kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a stand-up combat sport derived from a combination of boxing, Muay Thai, and Karate. In a kickboxing class, fighting fundamentals are combined and set to music to create an exiting cardiovascular and strength workout. Despite kickboxing not being a new concept, it has been growing in popularity with models and celebrities.

What goes on during Kickboxing classes?

Kickboxing is known as a HIIT-type of sport (high intensity interval training). You will not only have your sparring between partners, but also pads training and all kinds of bodyweight exercises that are done with little to no rest in between them. Exercises such as squats, crunches, burpees, mountain climbers, and many more are included during the class itself.

What should first-timers take note of?

The most important element when practicing kickboxing is to ensure to have proper form. It is recommended to always follow properly the instruction on movement by the certified trainers. As Kickboxing causes you to extend your arms and legs in a lot of the movement, it is very easy to overextend and cause strain to your body. Thus, you would want to make sure that you are hitting the bags or pads with the correct part of your hands and legs to avoid injuries.

Moreover, because the classes are cardio-based, they can move pretty quickly, so try not to overexert yourself and go at your own pace. If you find that you are out of breath during a class, you can either slow down your punches and kicks, or give yourself a 30-second to 1-minute break.

How soon will you see results?

If you are going to class at least three days per week and are eating a relatively clean diet, then you can expect to start seeing results within three weeks since these workouts are highly effective at burning fat and toning the muscles. However, it is also depending on your weight, metabolic rate and the intensity of the workout. During a class, you can expect to burn between 400-800 calories in an hour-long class.

And most importantly, don’t feel intimidated. Although a background in fitness can be helpful when starting kickboxing, it is definitely not something that’s needed. At Active Zone, We have women of all shapes and sizes in each of our classes. The key is to go at your own pace and listen to your body. If you eat well and be disciplined with the sport, you will lose weight and become much stronger incredibly fast.

Circuit Training: Good Or Bad

What is Circuit Training?

It is a workout that consists of several stations where you perform different exercises. After completing a station, you move on to the next one instead of resting.

The concept behind circuit training is to perform multiple exercises, each focusing on a different body part, in a row or at least with as little rest as possible between sets. For example, a person might perform a set of walking lunges, followed by a set of overhead presses, followed by some bicep curls etc.

Advantages

No matter what is your fitness level, going to the gym can get boring. Or worse, there are just some days when it seems like getting in a bit of exercise is impossible due to a tight schedule. Thus, Circuit Training helps to offset those challenges and gives you a simple solution. Not only is it creative and flexible, it is really ideal for the times when life gets tough.

From a weight-loss perspective, It is a high calorie burning workout during an hour-long circuit training. Remember that weight is a multi-pronged approach that includes a sensible diet along with weight training and cardio exercises.

The beauty of circuit training is that the exercises can be performed in any sequence, so you are free to create routines that target your weaknesses. For example, if your weakness is push-ups, you could include them first in a circuit to tackle when your muscles are most fresh.

Circuit training can be performed anywhere as long as there is room to exercise. Cardio components could include stair running, burpees, sprints on your street, or jumping rope. For strength components, you could easily integrate bodyweight exercises like push-ups, mountain climbers, and pull-ups.

Disadvantages

Circuit training is not going to prepare you for long endurance events like marathons. To prepare for the appropriate cardio conditioning for those kinds of fitness goals, you need to do a lot of Low-Intensity Steady State (LISS) training. It might be a good addition once a week as a cross-training option, but it absolutely would not prepare you for a long-distance event.

Also, proper form can be difficult to maintain during circuit training, especially if you’re new to your fitness path. This is because you have not developed enough muscle memory to perform the movements properly each time.

If you are new to fitness, you should make sure you can properly perform the movements of a circuit before you try to do them quickly. With this in mind, beginners might also suffer from fatigue during a circuit training session, especially if it is very fast-paced.

If you’re looking for a place that circuit training in an all-women setting, look no further! Drop us a message to find out more about what services we can offer!

How Often Should I Do Kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a full-body workout that consists of movements such as punches, kicks, and knee strikes set to fast-paced music. It is known to bring about many fitness benefits such as building stamina, improving coordination and flexibility, and burning calories as you build lean muscle with this fun and challenging workout.

Well, the real question comes to how many times a week should you do Kickboxing? The number of times per week is totally dependent upon your personal goals and current fitness level. If your body is in a decommissioned state then the best answer is probably 2 kickboxing classes per week spread out with at least a few days in between.

For fitness enthusiastic people who are doing kickboxing for cardio, it would be more advisable to attend 3 to 4 classes a week in an hour-long class. Kickboxing would not actually be doing an hour of work in an hour-long class, as there are partner switches, rest periods, and demonstrations of what to do next. Kickboxing ensures that you are going to be getting an exciting workout though while burning a ton of calories.

However, if you are looking to keep a fit and healthy lifestyle, 1 to 2 classes per week would be sufficient. But you are free to go for Kickboxing as many as you want to, as long as your body is holding up to the stress and demand you are placing on it. But you should remember to take an actual rest rest day to fully recover, like a slow recovery day once a week.

What you would experience at Active Zone?

Active Kickboxing Group Fitness Class is a 45 minutes Kickboxing session which would definitely shoot up your heart rate through several different types of movements. Our classes would not train you for combat, but instead aim towards your fitness goals.

Active Kickboxing Group Fitness Class

Our classes would undoubtedly make you break a sweat without realization. Our certified instructors would lead the kickboxing class by demonstrating choreographed movements of punches, kicks, and knee strikes set to fast-paced music. Kickboxing combinations are a mix of punches such as jabs, hooks and uppercuts. It also includes lower body movements such as front kicks and roundhouse kicks.

Not to mention, the classes incorporate both warm-ups and cool-downs, as well as both dynamic and cardio exercises. Usually, there is a brief segment specifically for core exercises such as crunches and squats. There are also pair work involved, so you will be sure to have a great exercise to boost coordination and communication.

Is Circuit Training Good For Beginners?

Circuit training is a workout that consists of 8-10 different exercises, usually referred to as stations. You perform each station for a certain amount of time (or for a specific number of reps), before moving right on to the next one. Since the format includes limited rest in between movements and rounds, circuit workouts move quickly, which means they can be done in 20 minutes or less if you use your time effectively.

Why is it an easier option for beginners?

If you are short on time or you want something a little more interesting in your workouts, circuit training would maximize your training that combines both Cardio and Strength Training in the same workout, making it a great choice as you will not get bored easily! Moreover, you can create your own circuit that is right for you, even if you are just starting out.

Benefits of Circuit Training

1. Get maximum results in minimum time

If you are trying to live a healthy lifestyle with a busy schedule, a circuit workout is an efficient way to carry out both strength training and cardio session all at once. Studies and research have shown that with a 15 or 30 minute circuit training, you can not only build muscle mass, but also burn calories and spike your metabolism to help with fat and weight loss, overall getting in better shape.

2. Challenging the whole body

Ever found yourself just wandering around the gym floor and winging your workout? Circuit training incorporates individual “stations” as part of a whole-body circuit, you are guaranteed to hit every major-and minor-muscle group. circuit workouts typically work your entire body through compound exercises, so no extra effort is needed to hit all of the different muscle groups. It is recommended to alternate between lower-body, upper-body, and core moves to give each muscle group a solid rest after each exercise.

3. Beating Gym Boredom

Are you someone that tends to get bored of the same workout programs week in and week out? Circuit training would definitely be a great choice as it is such a flexible format! The options in how you organize your workout are limitless. You are free to choose to stick to one routine for a while to measure your progress or mix it up every time you go to the gym. During circuit workouts, you are changing up the action every 30 seconds to a minute so it is nearly impossible to get bored.

4. Do them anytime, anywhere

Circuit training is the perfect workout for the time-crunched fitness fiend and you can do it with zero equipment too! You can do them at the gym with equipment and machines, or do them at home, literally any place just by incorporating only bodyweight exercises. Plus, if time is tight, do just one round; otherwise, do as many as you like for a higher intensity level workout. The choices are endless! And because of that, you can do circuit workouts multiple times a week by just switching up the stations.

Active Zone offers Active Circuit Training System (ACTS) classes which are 45 minutes long and will pack a punch! Our specialized circuit training class utilizes both body weight and equipment, making sure that you will break a sweat! Our classes are for women only, and we welcome all fitness levels!

How Kickboxing Can Change Your Body And Your Life

Unlike most other types of exercise, kickboxing emphasizes powerful movements. Power is different from strength, and especially for older adults, it is an even better predictor of mobility and their risk for falls. It has been shown to improve fitness, power, flexibility and agility. Kickboxing training tends to involve shorts bouts, for about 2 to 3 minutes long, including intense, repetitive movement — like hitting a punching bag over and over again and kicking and kneeing a pad someone else is holding. Moreover, it offers up a number of health benefits for people of all ages.

Improve Cardiovascular Health

Kickboxing has shown to increase maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). VO2max is the measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen you can use during physical activity. The higher it is, the more efficiently your body is getting and using oxygen. By doing interval work near your lactate threshold or even slightly dipping into your anaerobic zone, you train your heart to be more efficient. Thus, improving your VO2max which translates to improved fitness.

High Calorie Burn

Kickboxing is a high-energy cardio routine that will give your body and mind a boost, and will increase your energy levels. You will find yourself breathing hard and sweating out toxins which can help you to lose weight. Not only are you burning calories, you are toning, building endurance, improving your fitness and blasting away stress.

Build Muscular Endurance, Balance and Coordination

Kickboxing has shown to strengthen your ‘core’ and improve your reflexes and coordination skills. The speedy punches and kicks in the kickboxing routine will give you a chance to focus your energy to execute each movement successfully. The constant change of direction when throwing punches would activate many muscle groups, helping to develop coordination and balance. This then trains your muscles to work longer, thus building endurance.

Improve Mental Health

Kickboxing involves aerobic and anaerobic exercise, both of which positively impact mood. It does this by increasing endorphins and producing changes in the part of the brain. Studies have also shown that boxing exercises can diminish feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger. Kickboxing workouts offer several benefits for your body and mind, you can also kick and punch your way to a stress-free zone within minutes of your high-energy kickboxing routine.

Improve Posture

Core muscles in around your abdominal wall are targeted with kickboxing routines as you would use your waist and abs for balance, and to execute each carefully coordinated move. Kickboxing workouts engage the ab and lower back muscles, resulting in trunk stability, upright posture, and also improved postural control during physical activity.
