Post-workout recovery drinks? Which is right for you?

Hello everyone!

Ever wondered why you see people gulping down drinks from their shaker bottles after their workouts at the gym?

The bodyā€™s glycogen stores are fairly limited, so the ability to resynthesize or replace glycogen is a critical part of recovery between events or even when training sessions are close together.

In some cases this replenishment may need to be accomplished in just a few hours.

Another large part of the recovery process is rehydration.Ā Losses in fluid levels of more than two percent of total body weight can lead to drops in performance of more than ten percent.

So what can we take after a light or maybe grueling workout to refuel?

Best for Long-Distance Events:Ā Cherry juice

How it works:Ā Scientists suspect antioxidants are the key to limiting the inflammation and muscle damage after aĀ half-marathonĀ or other endurance event, and tart cherries are considered one of the most antioxidant-dense super fruits. Athletes have found itā€™s best to start ā€œrecoveryā€ work a week early and regular consumption can help with muscle recovery even faster!

Recovery Rx:Ā Drink 2 glasses a day for the 5 days before event, on the big day, and on the next day.

Best for Strength Training:Ā Low-fatĀ chocolate milk

How it works:Ā Many experts have long touted milk as a magical muscle building drinkā€”by ingesting protein after a strength training workout your muscles have the proper fuel to recover and grow.

Recovery Rx:Ā Drink one glass of low-fat milk(opt for non-dairy if you like) immediately after your workout.

Best for Yoga or Pilates:Ā Coconut water

How it works:Ā Coconut water contains a tremendous amount of potassium, which researchers say ease charley-horse-style aches, and it contains enough antioxidants and minerals to replenish stores that have been diminished by light exercise, such as yoga.

Because of its low sodium content, coconut water isnā€™t right for recovery after more intense workouts like running.

Recovery Rx:Ā Drink an 8- to 12-ounce serving immediately after class.

Also, listen to your body: Some of us may keep hydrated and fed-well enough during the rest of the day that we might not need any sort of beverage after a workout, even water.

Hi Everyone!

Happy Thursday, the weekend is drawing nearer!

As mentioned, we are introducing an Active Red trainer every Thursday.

This week we have Hilli Hartmann.

Hilli Hartmann

Hilli is a Senior Trainer at Active Red and a certified WAKO Active Kickboxing Trainer. Ā Graduating with a Masters in Business Administration, her passion for fitness and being involved in it is admirable.

Sharing her passion of sports and healthy living with others, she dedicates her time in teaching group classes and mass workout sessions like cardio kickboxing. Her versatility in Kickboxing with pad work/circuit training, it’s never a dull moment.

You’ll be in for a fun filled session of Active Kickboxing for sure. Hilli’s enthusiasm is one that you’ll catch on to in her classes.

WAKO meets with IOC members from Hungary

Hello everyone!

Happy Saturday to all.

WAKO is as strong as ever in all continents.

Year 2013 has been increasingly busy but we are happy to know that WAKOĀ has their application for IOC recognition to be determined in May and participation in the future World Games will also be decided.

Espen Lund, the acting president, had together with WAKO Vice-President a meeting with the IOC members from Hungary, Tamas Ajan and Pal Schmitt.

Mr. Schmitt is also former President of the Hungarian republic 2010-2012.

As Vice-President in the Hungarian Olympic Committee Mr. Leyrer have a great relationship within the Hungarian sports world, so these meetings was simply to build relations to capacities that can support WAKO in further developments and recognition of the sport.

We at Active Red supports WAKO and wish the very best that we’ll recognized by IOC officially.

Going raw’s been said to be one of the hardest diets to kickstart as like the name says, you eat everything uncooked.Ā A raw food diet consists of (typically produce, grains, seeds, nuts, and beans) that haven’t been heated above a certain temperature, usually somewhere between 104, and 118 degrees. Cooking destroys enzymes that raw foodists believe are essential to human health.

Having said all of the above, everything in health and fitness is about balance.
