How Should You Plan Out Your Exercise Schedule?

Think a single type of exercise will take care of all your needs? These tips can help you build a comprehensive fitness plan to improve your health and waistline.

What are the Best Exercises for You?

For many of us, even when we understand how much regular exercise can improve our mental and physical health, the real challenge lies in developing an exercise routine that we can stick with. It’s much easier to get up and get moving every day when you actually experience the results you’re looking for—whether that’s trimming your waistline, improving your sleep, mood, and energy, or easing symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression.

Whatever benefits you’re looking for from a fitness plan—and whatever your current fitness level—the key is to mix different types of physical activity. The most effective exercise plans should include a mix of three elements: cardio (or aerobic) training, strength training, and flexibility and balance exercises. This will not only maximize the health benefits, it will also keep your workouts varied and interesting.

Of course, you can always sign up for personal training sessions at a gym, find workout plans online, or download a fitness app, but developing the right exercise plan doesn’t have to be that complicated or expensive. These simple guidelines can help you make the most of your time and reap all the health and weight loss rewards of regular exercise.

How much Exercise do you Need?

The important thing to remember about exercise is that something is always better than nothing. By simply sitting less and moving more throughout your day, you can experience health benefits. It is recommended that you aim for:

At least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate-intensity activity per week. That’s 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week, broken down into 10-minute bursts if that’s easier.

OR

At least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week will deliver the same benefits, if your fitness level allows you to work out harder. That means running for 15 minutes, for example, instead of walking briskly for 30 minutes.

OR

You can combine both moderate- and vigorous-intensity exercise, remembering the general rule of thumb that 2 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise is the equivalent of 1 minute of vigorous-intensity activity.

AND DON’T FORGET TO

Include muscle-strengthening activity at least twice a week as part of your weekly totals.

Tips on How to Start

Start slowly

If you’ve never exercised before or have been sedentary for a long time, it’s advisable (after consulting with your doctor) to start off slowly and gradually build up to these activity levels. Instead of 30 minutes of walking 5 days a week, for example, start with 5 or 10 minutes and build up from there.

How many days a week should I work out?

A recent study in the UK found that people who squeeze all their exercise into one or two sessions over the weekend experience almost as many health benefits as those who work out more often. However, spreading your exercise sessions across three or more days a week may help reduce your risk of injury and keep your energy levels up throughout the week.

At Active Zone, we offer classes such as Active Kickboxing and Kickboxing Bootcamp to not only teach you the techniques, but also make sure that you have the workout of your life! Our classes are 45 minutes long, with our certified instructors guiding you throughout the lesson! CNY is Coming Soon! How Can I Stay Healthy?

Chinese New Year is a season of feasting, gathering, and catching up with our loved ones. To usher in the new year, it’s common to have huge meals such as hotpot, and to snack on lots of goodies. It’s hard not to feel guilty about excessive eating, so here are some tips to help out with the festive period!

  • Eat Slowly

Focus on how you eat: are you chewing your food for an appropriate amount of time? Are you taking sips of water between a few bites? It takes some time for your stomach to signal to your brain that it’s full and satiated. If you’re eating too quickly, by the time your brain gets the signal from your stomach to stop eating, you’d be too full and bloated. Taking your time to eat can help reduce what you eat, and it also helps to incorporate water or drinks between bites! And since it’s a time of gathering, you can have your meals over the conversation to slow down your eating speed.

  • Portion Your Food

Having a plate or serviette can help with portioning. Instead of eating snacks and goodies directly from their containers, you can take out an exact amount of food you want to eat. Controlling your portions can help with eating too much, and can also help you get a sample of more varieties of snacks!

Healthy eating plate. Infographic chart with proper nutrition proportions. Food balance tips. Vector illustration isolated on a light beige background.

It can help to pick what foods you want to eat, too. At meals, try to eat more vegetables and cut back on processed foods. You can also have fruits as a dessert or snack to share with your family!

  • More Exercise

After the grand meals, it wouldn’t hurt to get more exercise into balance out the eating. If you’re looking for high-intensity, sure-burn workouts that can help with that, Active Zone has you covered! We have a variety of workout classes available for all women of all fitness levels!

We currently offer Active Kickboxing, Active Circuit Training System (ACTS), Metabolic Conditioning (METCON), and Active Kickboxing Bootcamp. Our classes are 45 minutes long (temporarily shortened due to COVID-19). We also offer personal training, and our experienced instructors are more than happy to help you with a workout routine!

If you’re interested to find out more about our classes and facilities, feel free to contact us! We hope to see you soon at Active Zone!

Benefits of Weightlifting for WOMEN (That every woman should know)

1. Lose Body Fat

Weight training builds muscle, as lean muscle increases so does metabolism. A higher metabolism means that you will burn more calories all day long. Studies found that the the average woman who strength trains two to three times a week for two months will gain nearly two pounds of muscle and will lose 3.5 pounds of fat. For each pound of muscle you gain, you’ll burn 35 to 50 more calories per day. That can really add up over the long term; for example, 4 extra pounds of muscle can burn up to 10 extra pounders per year!

2. Gain Strength Without Bulking

One of the most common reasons women avoid weight training is because they are afraid of “bulking.” This is a misconception as it physically can not happen. Women simply don’t have the testosterone to build muscle like men. Women have 10 to 30 times less testosterone than men and have a much harder time gaining size from strength training. Insead women develop muscle definition and strength without the size.

3. Decrease Risk of Osteoporosis

Weight training not only strengthens muscles, it strengthens your bones. Weight training increases bone density, which reduces the risk of fractures and broken bones. Research has also shown weight training can increase spinal bone density to create a strong and healthy spine.

4. Reduce Risk of Injury

21-Stretches-and-Exercises-to-Banish-Your-Knee-Pain744.jpg

Weight training also increases strength in connective tissues and joints. Strong joints, ligaments, and tendons are important to prevent injury and can relieve pain from osteoarthritis. Strengthening muscles and connective tissue will make injury from daily tasks and routine exercise less likely, and can even improve sports performance.

5. Burn More Calories

Weight training has been proven to raise your metabolism for up to 24 hours after a workout. The more intense the workout the more calories are burned. After an intense workout there is more Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption, or EPOC, meaning there is an increase in oxygen consumption, helping break down fat stores in the body.

6. Improve Posture and Reduce Back Pain

Weight-training will strengthen your back, shoulders, and core, helping to correct bad posture so that you can stand taller, with shoulders back and spine straight. A stronger back and core will also prevent lower back pain

7. Enhance Mood and Reduce Stress

Exercise and weight-training release endorphins. Endorphins are neurotransmitters that prevent pain, improve mood, and fight depression. An increased in endorphins naturally reduces stress and anxiety. Endorphins also stimulate the mind, improving alertness and boosting energy. Weight-training can brighten your entire day or help you combat a bad one.
