METCON is known for its effectiveness for fat loss due to increased fat oxidation, reductions in appetite, and the increase in muscular adaptations and the subsequent increase in lean body mass. During Metabolic Conditioning, in order to hit the fat-burning zone, 60-70% of the maximum heart rate have to be used with cardio-based workouts.
Where to begin?
Firstly, you have to work out what motivates you – is it to complete a set number of reps, or is it to see how many reps you can complete in a given time. One can start by testing out how many sets of workout can be done. For example, you can start by doing as many burpees as you can in 60 seconds and note down how many you can achieve. After that, repeat the same amount of burpees and see how long you will take to finish. If it only takes 30 seconds, you are more driven by working to number. However, if it takes you longer, it would be time instead. Use your motivator to then design your fat-burning workout.
Simple BUT Effective Exercises
The beauty of METCON is its simplicity. Below mentioned are popular exercises which are frequently used during a METCON workout. One exercise should be done in a minute, 40 seconds of each move, rest for 20 seconds, then move on to the next.
- Burpees
- Mountain Climbers
- Box Jump
- Lunges
- Sit-ups
- Squats / Jump Squats
- Wide-to-narrow Alternating Press-ups
By using continuous variety, not only does it push the body to the max, it would prevent workout boredom as well. These exercises, which usually include whole body, help you lose fat and gain muscle more quickly and more efficiently than cardio or strength training alone. The point is to keep your heart rate as elevated as possible while exercising.

METCON at Active Zone
A METCON program contains moderate-intensity activity, high-intensity activity, or both. Given these requirements, there are a wide variety of different exercises that can be used. At Active Zone, we have classes and personal trainings held by our certified trainers to recommend the best workout for you to achieve your fitness goals.
Equally important, before exercises starts, each client undergoes fitness evaluation, which helps our trainers determine what’s not only most effective for cardiovascular conditioning, but also what’s safest.
Our METCON class is 45mins long (temporarily due to Covid-19) and guide you to reach your fitness goal with limit time.
