Unlike most other types of exercise, kickboxing emphasizes powerful movements. Power is different from strength, and especially for older adults, it is an even better predictor of mobility and their risk for falls. It has been shown to improve fitness, power, flexibility and agility. Kickboxing training tends to involve shorts bouts, for about 2 to 3 minutes long, including intense, repetitive movement — like hitting a punching bag over and over again and kicking and kneeing a pad someone else is holding. Moreover, it offers up a number of health benefits for people of all ages.
Improve Cardiovascular Health
Kickboxing has shown to increase maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). VO2max is the measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen you can use during physical activity. The higher it is, the more efficiently your body is getting and using oxygen. By doing interval work near your lactate threshold or even slightly dipping into your anaerobic zone, you train your heart to be more efficient. Thus, improving your VO2max which translates to improved fitness.
High Calorie Burn
Kickboxing is a high-energy cardio routine that will give your body and mind a boost, and will increase your energy levels. You will find yourself breathing hard and sweating out toxins which can help you to lose weight. Not only are you burning calories, you are toning, building endurance, improving your fitness and blasting away stress.
Build Muscular Endurance, Balance and Coordination
Kickboxing has shown to strengthen your ‘core’ and improve your reflexes and coordination skills. The speedy punches and kicks in the kickboxing routine will give you a chance to focus your energy to execute each movement successfully. The constant change of direction when throwing punches would activate many muscle groups, helping to develop coordination and balance. This then trains your muscles to work longer, thus building endurance.
Improve Mental Health
Kickboxing involves aerobic and anaerobic exercise, both of which positively impact mood. It does this by increasing endorphins and producing changes in the part of the brain. Studies have also shown that boxing exercises can diminish feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger. Kickboxing workouts offer several benefits for your body and mind, you can also kick and punch your way to a stress-free zone within minutes of your high-energy kickboxing routine.
Improve Posture
Core muscles in around your abdominal wall are targeted with kickboxing routines as you would use your waist and abs for balance, and to execute each carefully coordinated move. Kickboxing workouts engage the ab and lower back muscles, resulting in trunk stability, upright posture, and also improved postural control during physical activity.
